The medium size (a 71-liter volume) weighs in at 3.9 pounds, offering 16 more liters of space for the same weight as the Patagonia Black Hole. Two sets of daisy chains running horizontally underneath the opening ensure that you can secure the bag to any surface, like the roof of a car or the back of a kayak. The Base Camp's body is 1000D recycled PVC nylon with a non-PFC durable water-repellent finish, giving the bag a nice structure that also collapses into a small carrying case. Two detachable shoulder straps allow you to carry the bag as a travel backpack, and four exterior compression straps help cut down on size if you don't fill up the space. Built similarly to the Black Hole, the Base Camp opens into one roomy main compartment with a zippered mesh pocket on the inside of the lid. There's a reason North Face athletes pile these onto airport landing strips when heading out on expeditions-or upcycle them into a working shelter-they're dang tough. But if you're heading out on a canoe, raft, or sailboat trip (or any other adventure where the water is nearby), a few extra pounds and dollars might be an easy price for the peace of mind this bag provides.Īvailable sizes: 50, 75, and 100L, plus a 28L backpackīest Rugged Duffel: The North Face Base Camp This duffel features carrying options aplenty, with six total lash points, grab handles on each end, and two removable backpack straps that double as the carrying handles (and allow for crossby wear, too).Īll that tough hardware comes at a price, however-the Panga weighs 5.2 pounds when empty, which is heavy for a duffel, and rings up at $300 for the 50-liter version. Built with a laminated, high-density nylon that Yeti calls Thickskin and a Hydrolok zipper, the Panga is for the toughest, wettest conditions (there's even an EVA-molded "landing pad" on the bottom of the bag). (This bag and the North Face Base Camp duffel both survived an 18-hour drive from Michigan to Colorado in my hitch basket cargo carrier, and arrived in better condition than I did after the drive.)Īt first glance (and handle), these dry bags seem a bit overbuilt-and pricey. Two padded, removable shoulder straps help transform the duffel into a travel backpack during longer backcountry hauls, and a series of daisy chains on each corner provide ample access for lashing the bag down to, say, the top of a car, or a burro. ![]() Likely the most well-known bag on the list, it's made from 100% recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate, a fabric that's durable and abrasion-resistant but still pliable enough that the duffel can fold into its own small interior pocket.Ī large zipper, tucked underneath the lid, gives full access to the main compartment of the bag, though there are also two small, zipped pockets on the inside of the lid, perfect for stashing small items like chargers, valuables, water bottles, cords, or toiletries. The 60L Black Hole Duffel has been my go-to travel bag for the past several years, for a variety of reasons. The following seven top picks have been thoroughly vetted and approved by a team of Field Mag editors and contributors, sure to keep your gear organized and protected throughout your next journey.īest All-Around Adventure Duffel: Patagonia Black Hole Whether you're flying commercial, catching a heli, traveling by camel, or simply driving, you're gonna need the right bag. And probably the largest you can "comfortably" carry. Here's one key tip: 50-60 liters is the biggest that will fit in an airplane's overhead bin as carry-on luggage. With these features in the bag, the primary factor to consider when choosing a duffel is its size, and its weight once it's fully loaded (you will be carrying it, after all). Our main criteria for judging the best travel duffel bags are durability, or how well they handle the toughest conditions portability, because what's the point of investing in a high-quality bag if it doesn't transport well and good design and quality materials, so that you're not left struggling with a poorly placed zipper, losing gear inside the bag, or longing for easy-acess exterior pockets on the move. ![]() ![]() You never know where you'll end up when you hit the road-that's kinda the point-so your best bet is to invest in a bag that can handle it all, and that's a duffel (or a duffle, if you prefer). Plus, you don't have to fear cobblestone streets, icy sidewalks, or dirt roads with a duffel. Compared to their wheeled suitcase counterparts, duffels are known for better versatility and durability (if you get the right one). Allow us to stake a potentially sweeping claim: the best bag for adventure travel is a duffel.

![]() Recently, blood oxygen level–dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography have been employed for in vivo brain imaging in humans after administration of a psychedelic, and results indicate that intravenously administered psilocybin and LSD produce decreases in oscillatory power in areas of the brain’s default mode network. Two small pilot studies of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy also have shown positive benefit in treating both alcohol and nicotine addiction. Recent and exciting developments in the field have occurred in clinical research, where several double-blind placebo-controlled phase 2 studies of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in patients with cancer-related psychosocial distress have demonstrated unprecedented positive relief of anxiety and depression. ![]() Several useful rodent models have been developed over the years to help unravel the neurochemical correlates of serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor activation in the brain, and a variety of imaging techniques have been employed to identify key brain areas that are directly affected by psychedelics. Today there is a consensus that psychedelics are agonists or partial agonists at brain serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptors, with particular importance on those expressed on apical dendrites of neocortical pyramidal cells in layer V. After the virtually contemporaneous discovery of (5 R,8 R)-(+)-lysergic acid- N,N-diethylamide (LSD)-25 and the identification of serotonin in the brain, early research focused intensively on the possibility that LSD and other psychedelics had a serotonergic basis for their action. Their origin predates written history, and they were employed by early cultures in many sociocultural and ritual contexts. They are generally considered physiologically safe and do not lead to dependence or addiction. I think there was a great deal of camaraderie and commonness of purpose among them. So they thought of themselves as a corps, as a unit. So he assigned himself a captain of a corps of Discovery. There was a snafu in the war department and he only got a lieutenant commission. Clark for instance was supposed to get a captain's rank and he didn't. They called themselves the corps of Discovery. How did the captains form such a cohesive unit? Of course, he wasn't a volunteer and he wasn't an enlisted man. One other member of the party who's a little bit out of sync with everyone else is Clark's black slave, York, who was brought along. The one we don't count among that thirty-three is Lewis's dog, Seaman, who was also along. She was carrying her baby with her and so that's counted. By that time they'd picked up Charbonneau, the husband of Sacagawea, one of the most famous members of the party. They picked up a few and they lost a few along the way.Īfter they left Fort Mandan in North Dakota, their first winter encampment, they had thirty-three exactly in the party. They had around forty-five or so going at that point. The numbers are sort of loose on these hired men. The numbers are a bit vague because they brought along a bunch of French boatmen with them who'd help them pull and pole the boats up the river. They volunteered for it out of a sense of adventure, maybe some rewards at the end, or whatever. The men were volunteers in other words, they weren't ordered to come on the expedition. For instance, Drouillard who was the expert hunter, they wanted him and didn't insist that he enlist. They had to join the army to become a member of the expedition. Well, for the most part they were enlisted men. What about the other members of the expedition? They both considered themselves a part of the nation's elite and they served in that capacity. ![]() They were both educated about as well as anyone could be during their generation. I think it's a way to characterize and have them complement each other on the expedition. The whole characterization may be off some. He's sort of seen as a little bit rawer, more a frontiersmen type. ![]() He'd stay on the boat, liked to be with the men and worked with them more closely. Clark is seen as sort of a man of the people. Lewis is seen as this moody intellectual type who liked to get off the boat and go on some scientific excursion, try and discover a new plant species or whatever. How would you characterize Lewis and Clark? This interview was conducted in the summer of 1997 at Lost Trail Pass, on the Idaho-Montana border. When completed, it will comprise thirteen volumes. I have always felt Wind Waker was the best looking game of that console generation. It was fine in 1998, but the series desperately needs to implement one for its next 3D installment. ![]() With changes like these as well as a controller with more input methods than the Gamecube, it makes the lack of a jump button seem more jarring. Aiming and shooting projectiles now also lets you move and aim at the same time, streamlining many items such as the bow and hookshot. The d-pad is now used to quickly select items, which is useful at sea where you do not have to map the cannon and wand to a precious item slot. This is especially noticeable as many other parts of the control setup received noticeable improvements. ![]() Any time in which Link is not on solid ground has a distinct lack of precision as I had difficulty jumping and swinging on ropes. Ten years later, however, controlling Link does not feel as tight or polished as it once did. Wind Waker’s control setup was a huge step forward from Ocarina of Time upon its release. What makes it special, however, takes a little more explaining than the series’ other installments. Personally, I have always cherished Wind Waker most, so much so that an HD upgrade was more than enough to justify purchasing a Wii U. Then, there are those that were wowed by Ocarina of Time’s revolutionary step forward in 3D back in 1998, those that love the dark tone and risks Majora’s Mask offered, and the hipsters who say Okami. Others may want the polish and emphasis on dungeon design Twilight Princess offers. Some may prefer the old school design choices found in the original or A Link to the Past. This serves to foreshadow many of the challenges the player will face, as well as the labyrinth-like structure of the game. In Half-Life, protagonist Gordon Freeman is introduced to the facility in a notable sequence involving very little interactivity. The resulting crisis is seen from several points of view in Half-Life and its expansions. There are many notable creatures that come from Xen, such as the Vortigaunts and Headcrabs. As a result, Xen creatures are teleported into the facility and prey on its human inhabitants. At the beginning of Half-Life, one such crystal, revealed in Half-Life 2: Episode Two to have been provided by the G-Man, is put through an anti-mass spectrometer and causes a resonance cascade, tearing the spacetime continuum. ![]() Creatures and crystals from Xen are subsequently brought back to the facility for testing. Prior to the beginning of Half-Life, scientists experimenting on teleportation discover Xen, a border dimension somehow intrinsically involved in the teleportation process. Over the course of the series, Black Mesa is revealed to be conducting top-secret research into various fields, such as teleportation and experimental weapons research. This facility is depicted as a vast series of underground research laboratories as well as surface constructions such as offices, chemical waste disposal plants, and personnel dormitories (even cafeterias, where Gordon Freeman can destroy Doctor Magnusson's microwave casserole), all powered by a hydroelectric dam and connected by an advanced tram system.
